My name is Rachel Phyllis Awuor, the firstborn in a family of five. I am partially orphaned, having lost my dad 20 years ago. In 2016, I completed my KCPE exams, scoring 306 (C+). My intended destination for secondary education was Moi Suba Secondary School, a girls’ school. However, due to financial constraints and the requisite entry criteria, I faced the daunting prospect of missing out on this opportunity. I contemplated returning to primary school to redo my KCPE exams, hoping to secure a scholarship from organizations such as Wings to Fly or the KCB Foundation. It was at this critical juncture that the HOPA Foundation intervened; offering me a lifeline when all hope seemed lost. Thus, in 2017, my journey with HOPA commenced.
From my first year in high school onward, HOPA Foundation has been a true blessing, consistently providing for my educational needs. Throughout my four years in high school, I never experienced a shortage of resources. Whether it was tuition fees or other necessities, HOPA Foundation ensured that my well-being was prioritized. Additionally, during holidays, they organized tutoring sessions to address our weaknesses, a gesture that significantly contributed to my academic growth.
Currently, I am in my third year at the University of Nairobi, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. HOPA has remained steadfast in their support, accompanying me every step of the way. I am immensely grateful for their unwavering commitment to my education.
Looking ahead, my aspiration is to become a sponsor within the HOPA Foundation, enabling me to extend support to other underprivileged children. I firmly believe that education is the greatest gift one can give, as it holds the key to a better future. Just as the foundation’s slogan suggests, I am determined to pay it forward.
Furthermore, I aspire to pursue a Master’s degree and explore opportunities abroad, eager to broaden my horizons and engage with diverse communities. My journey with HOPA has instilled in me a sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact on the world.
